The first is a remix of Cartridge's song The Woods. It's a playful, electropop remix with some happy sounding synth work with a touch of 8-bit in the background.

I was listening to SModcast (Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier's podcast) a few days ago and heard this Jets track for the first time. After looking it up on Youtube I stumbled upon an amazing subgenre of music that was quite prevelent in the 80s. I've always loved the cheesy funk from the 80s such as Evelyn 'Champagne' King and D-Train, but this new discovery steps of the cheese.

If you love corny, sugary RnB vocals and classic electro beats, stabs and synths than you're in luck because everyday for the next week I'm going to post a dope electro'n'b track, possibly an accompanying music video and then end the week with a Monday Mixdown dedicated to perhaps the best subgenre of music for the summer.

Here's another track from the UK native, Vegas residing Darkartois.

As much as I enjoyed his Queen remix, this track steps everything up a bit; the bass, the dark, murky atmosphere and the overall quality. 'Nightmare' is filled with low end goodness and some gothic sounding orchestral stabs, perfect for the end of the night.

That's right y'all, it's finally here.

I could bore you with all of my excuses......so I will!

Recently I got a new laptop, upgraded to Torq 1.5 (for free!) and bought a new external, USB powered hard drive for DJing purposes. The combination of working the kinks out of Torq 1.5 on a Macbook, re-organizing all of my music and planning to move (in late August) had set me back in terms of mixing for your pleasure.

I had to get all of this finished before July 26th because I'm spinning at an autoshow in Toronto. If there's anyone in the T.O. area, drop by the Subaru Autoshow @ Willowdale Subarau to check out some sweet cars on display, hear good music, maybe buy a couple Imprezas and enjoy some BBQ.

So I finally got around to recording a Monday Mixdown this weekend, and it was a beaut' too. To my chegrin, I listened to the mix before posting and it sounded terrible! There was a problem with my setup (not to simply blame the equipment), that was creating a skip/doubled sound, especially on the bass hits.
I did some rooting around in message boards, but didn't find a solution. So I went and checked everything I could from cords and stylii to records and software.
Finally I discovered that the problem was only with certain MP3s. In particular, the ones which I had in the 'current Monday Mixdown' folder were corrupted or something. I transferred them from my main computer (PC) to my Macbook via home network. Something must have happened there, because everything else on the Mac was fine...and it had been taken straight from an external HD.
Now that that's settled, I can record a proper mix for next week.

I haven't been paying much attention to the music coming out of Ireland, but I'm going to start.

Splitloop is a dynamic duo from Dublin (see what I did there...) that has a full album coming soon. I'm a big fan of Rico Tubbs, so I was pleased when I heard the great treatment given to his track 'The Party'. It's a lot of fun and a definite dancefloor burner.

Mailbox Mania!

Let's take a look at what's been dropped into our mailbox in the last week or two, shall we?

First up we've got Darkartois. Originally from the UK, but now residing in Las Vegas delivers some bass-heavy music that doesn't disappoint. I love his self-description put up on Myspace, which says:

"I am 25. I am from the UK. I am living/mutating in Las Vegas. I am not a bandwagon laptop dj. I am one person. I am influenced by a wide spectrum of genre's. I use Ableton Live, a Moog Little Phatty, and Korg and Rob Papen soft synths. I do not suck corporate cock. I am outspoken. I love to party with like minded people. I was one half of electro duo neON!. I am now Darkartois and I hope you enjoy my music."

I really enjoy this remix, especially the extended intro that features those Freddie Mercury vocals that I adore.

Whitefolkz out of Washington, D.C. is dropping a new album soon and sent us this track. I love the production and the vocals, but the hook is a little corny to me. Still makes me move, and that's what is important.

It's been super busy the last few days on my end. I didn't have a chance to record a Monday Mixdown or post much at all. The following couple days are going to be similar.

I'm sure most people have already grabbed what may be the biggest release of the summer, but if you haven't then make sure to grab it now!

Here's some music that's been floating around blogland recently.

First up is NYC's Drop the Lime. This dude has been holding down the bass-heavy scene for a while now. This track is from the Trouble & Bass Scion A/V CD Sampler. It's dark and bassy, but delivers some synth work that is a refreshing change from the warbly sound that's starting to swamp the internets.

Whoooooooa! Next is a new remix from one of The Boombox Incident's favorite artists, Sidechains. The Spanish producer gives us a bouncy remix that has stripped away much of the high-end syth work that is expected and replaced it with some old school rave stabs. Still a dancefloor burner.

For the last year my favorite production/remix work has come from members of the Brick Bandits. Mad Decent just posted this track the other day. It's so hot my mouse and keys are melting (worst joke...).

Bleszt & DJ Lokey - Turn Me Up (Jersey Anthem)

This track is way too short. Super hype rap/house track from DJ Benzi and Willy Joy featuring Wale and Lady Gaga. The Doo Dew Brown bassline is totally underused these days.

The last track is a little late now (first posted in late April on Hype Machine), but it's crrrrraaaazy! I love when producers/DJs post set intros and edits for performing. However, they often have tons of tags in the them which kind of defeats the purpose. Yeah, it's cool to listen to the intros and stuff, but I'd never play it live. It's not like I want to claim the edit or intro as my own, but why post it if we can't use it? This one is pretty good though (it says 'MSTRKRFT' once). Give this a listen for sure, I have it on repeat.

I stumbled across this video while researching for an all-90s-dance Monday Mixdown. I'm sure this song would get people moving in a club these days. For some reason I assume Top Billin' loves this track, but I have no proof.

One of the guys in the group is Toronto's Richard 'Humpty' Vission. He's a well known, mainstream producer along the same lines as MC Mario and Chris Sheppard.

The dude on the synth is hilarious, plus him and the other white guy remind me of the two hip hop dudes from the movie Encino Man. Hat and all.

Regarding the Lakers vs. Magic game last night.

How the hell do you squander a 5 point lead with like 1 min to go? OH you put Jameer Nelson on the floor, that's how. Dude barely played and Alston, who should have been in, was playing amazing the whole game. It's simple Jameeeeeer, get on Fisher TIGHT, like Courney Lee's face mask, and let him either pass or drive the ball. How do you let that 3 happen? Honestly you could fit a MAC Truck between you and Fish.

Why don't more teams foul with a 3 point lead? So fine, you get Kobe on the line, he hits 2, you still have a 1 point lead with minimal time on the clock. You put Lewis on the line and seal the deal, go back to LA and make it a series. From a coaching stand point it shows that you may not have full confidence in their defecnce but it's the finals, do what it takes to win! But I'm not knocking Stan, we need someone like him in Toronto. Jeff, are you really that comfortable as an announcer?

Fuck Kobe too, bitch turned over the ball twice in the final few minutes. Rhi Rhi might like it rough but damn Bynum, try not to get 4 fowls in the first half of every playoff game, or you just want to make Odom look good? Shit son.

Our blog is based out of Canada, so we're happy when local talent sends us something special. Amadou Isaacs, a.k.a. Xan out of Vancouver just sent us his interpretation of Stacey Q's hit from the 80s, '2 of Hearts'.

He's kept a lot of Q's vocals intact, with a little looping and stuttering. The track also has a real dark and dirty feel to it. It makes me think of a foot chase through a sewer in a post-apocalyptic science fiction film....and then the vocals kick in. What's great about the production is that it contrasts Stacey Q's sweet, sugary singing perfectly. Really nice work.

I Gotta Say Something

Last night a friends and I went to go see Tiga at Circa. The venue, as usual, was astounding and came complete with enough eye candy on the walls and floors to keep your mind off of the sheer idiocy of some people.

It had been one of my friends first time there so we decided to take a walk around to check out all of the different levels and bars that Circa has to offer. The 'underwater' bar was great in both decor and service. The 'hip-hop' room was your stereotypical hip-hop/top40 scene -- sunglasses inside the club, a 10:1 ratio, people crowding the bar even after they have gotten a drink -- it all seemed the same and I suddenly felt 19 again. Thankfully, we left after waiting for the slow bartender to get our drinks (we had to tell her our order twice!). To avoid the crowd going up and down the stairs, we went around back to the Kidrobot bar. Lo and behold there is a dude getting head right beside a giant Kidrobot logo. Dude, what the fuck? There are plenty of nooks and crannys to Circa and you had to choose a major walkway to get your dick wet. Nobody wants to see that shit, honestly. All the power to you for getting yours and all, but I felt like he was gloating. The dude saw us walk by with our disgusted faces and he looked like he wanted to give us high fives. Fucking jerk. Great, you got some chicken head to suck you off in public, want a medal? I hope you get the herp.

We went downstairs to check out Tiga and decided to get right up front. The crowd was immediately different in comparison with the hip-hop room. Nobody got mad if you accidentaly stepped on their Puma and everyone was just trying to have a good time. About midway through Tiga's set the party started to get a little bit crazy. People were jumping on stage and dancing around the DJ booth. At first it was a few girls then pretty soon it was a co-ed affair. It's normal, I have no problem with it, it happens all the time. But there were a group of guys that thought otherwise. These weren't your normal group of guys trying to pick up girls or whatever. They were a type I had never really seen before in Toronto. These were true fan-boy-groupies. There were 3 of them, 1 wearing an E.R.O.L drugs shirt (Erol Alkan), another wearing a Dim Mak (label for Steve Aoki, Felix Cartal, etc) tee and the other wearing a Turbo shirt (Tiga's record label). Better yet, the dude wearing the Turbo shirt was holding up another Turbo shirt trying to get Tiga's attention like "Look at me Tiga I'm your biggest fan, let me fellate you later on" type shit. These groupies were getting mad that people were dancing around the stage because the dancers were blocking their view of Tiga spinning. The groupies almost got into a fight with some of the onstage dancers until they finally left the stage fed up that they couldn't lock eyes with Tiga. Retards.

Sorry for the lack of pictures. I don't want this to turn into some Cobrasnake-Lastnight's Party bullshit. Plus I don't carry a camera.

New Remix from Spanish duo Buffetlibre.

Barcelona's Buffetlibre sent us they're latest remix in the mail, and we'd love to share it with you. Buffetlibre and Sidechains are big contributors to Spain's growing electro/italo/nu-disco scene. There's a lot of beautiful synth work going on across the pond.

I'm not a big fan of Patrick Wolf, out of south London, but I'm loving this track. It starts off soft and slow, then builds up energy and delivers some really funky, danceable music. I love italo/electro from the early 80s (check out the Red Room), and this is as close to the real thing as possible while sounding new and fresh. Wolf's deep voice contrasts the high tone synths perfectly.

Weekly MVP: Devo on Letterman circa '82

That's right, it's not actually a music video and it's a Devo song other than 'Whip It'.

Those crazy dudes in yellow suits from Akron, Ohio have created some amazing music, but are usually grouped in with all the one-hit-wonders of the 80s. They're a great band, with catchy 'indie' songs and interesting conceptual ideas (like why they are called 'Devo' for instance).

'That's Good' is one of my favorite Devo tracks...so much so that I figured out how to play the lead synth on a MicroKorg (there's a Youtube vid that shows you the proper settings).

Mark Mothersbaugh has a sweet name in my opinion, and some kick ass hair in this video.

The Monday Mixdown #7 - It's a Rave Dave!

This installment of The Monday Mixdown features more ravey content than usual. It's 27 minutes of electro, bassline, fidget and jackin' house.

I think the live recording went rather well this week. A couple small details need some work, but it's definitely bangin' from beginning to end. The first Rampage track comes in a little too loud, and the mix from Stab to Washout is a bit dodgy. And is it just me or does Alarm Bells seem out of place? I love that song, but I find it hard to give a nice place in a set.

One other issue with the mix is this weird buzz in the background. I think something is up with my computer/DJ equipment setup. I'm going to investigate further. I'm pretty sure the inputs I used this time around are a little different, that may be the case. I'll keep my eye on it.

Last thing, I haven't been producing any music for a while now. The last thing I worked on was a few months before I started this site. However, I always wanted to edit something together with Van Halen's 'Hot For Teacher', to use for a set intro. I finally got around to fitting it in using some simple editing. It's pretty hype, I can't wait to test it out live.

P.S. Go over to Beatport and pick up Hervé's 'Who Da Champ' which was released today. It's bizzzonkers.

New Hervé Remix and Single

I've never been a fan of Prodigy, but I looooove me some Hervé (a.k.a. Joshua Harvey, Action Man, Young Lovers, Speaker Junk, Voodoo Chilli, The Count of Monte Cristal etc. etc.)

The English producer/DJ has a new single dropping on Monday. The title track, 'Baseball Bat', isn't anything of interest to me - it's a hybrid of metal (vocals) and dubstep. However, the supposed B-side (Who Da Champ) is bangin'. I heard the song first on Sinden's We Make It Good mix a long while back. You can preview the song on Hervé's Myspace.

This new remix of Prodigy's track 'Omen', from their new album, is pretty slammin' as well.
Heavy bass drop around 1:30, accompanied by some real heavy, wet synth work.

I love hot (preferably dry) days when you can hang out outside in just your shorts until 11pm or cruise down the highway with all 4 windows open and the chunes blasting. I finally got around to listening to Rob Threezy's 'House Broke' mix. Daaaaaaamn! It is a beast of a mix, and well worth the download. I scouted out the tracklist, wanting to cop some new material and discovered Chicago's Rampage. He's associated with Rob Threezy, along with Maddjazz and Charlie Glitch. Make sure to give their Myspace some attention.

Rampage's sound is similar to Threezy's, as it combines Bmore/Philly Club with old school Rave synths and stabs, and some steady house thumps.

You can find most of his releases over at Beatport. I recommend 'Fire' (which is featured on the Rob Threezy mixtape). He's also got a remix of Threezy's new single 'The Chase'.

Yeah....so....I totally forgot to post this week's MVP on Monday. Roman's last post with the Outhere Brothers jogged my memory however.

I decided to put up some more Outhere Brothers videos this week. Each video speaks for itself, and the songs are absolute classics. I really think that bass-heavy, early 90s hip-house like Outhere Brothers and Real 2 Reel should be cranked anywhere there's a dancefloor. It's time for a resurrgence and people like Top Billin' and Dave Nada have already gotten involved. But we need more!

This edition of the Monday Mixdown is a live recording once again. It's a trial run of a new mixtape I am working on. The tracklist isn't final as I'm waiting for some goodies to be released, and some exclusives to arrive.

There are some repeats from previous Monday Mixdown's, but I want this new mixtape to be a combination of party music and the most mainstream stuff I have. Why? It's something I plan on using when trying to get club gigs.

Of course, I'm always working during the summer and discover these types of things late. I was catching up on First Up's posting and discovered this MC.

His single 'I Go Harder (Than Baltimore)' is produced by none other than Baltimore Club music veteran DJ Booman. The interesting thing is, the track isn't a Bmore Club tune. It's a straight hip hop track that bangs nonetheless. Booman's got the chops.

The proposed Baile Funk vs. Dancehall/Bashment mix is taking longer than expected...mostly due to dancehall being way slower than Baile Funk.

In the meantime, I have thrown together some tracks on the fly. They seem to fit together well (except for the MSTRKRFT?).

Roughest mix ever though.

Not really any mistakes, but the crossfades and EQing are lazy and I neglected my array of effects.

That's right, Scott Caan was in a rap group when he was a youngin'. His partner in rhyme is a very young 'The Alchemist', the producer known for working with MCs like Mobb Deep and Dilated Peoples.

The Whooliganz were part of the Soul Assasins crew, fronted by Cypress Hill and House of Pain (you can hear the influence in the track). Speaking of Soul Assassins, remeber this shit? Gaaaaaaangsta! One of my favorite beats of all time.

The Monday Mixdown #4 - Fidget & Bass

The last two weeks have been a little crazy. Wrote 4 exams and then flew out to Manhattan to visit some family, relax and do some shopping. Now that I'm settled in at my summer job, I can get back to the bloggins'.

Here is the 4th installment of The Monday Mixdown (except this is Friday). Kyle and I have decided to record live mixes now cause it takes a lot of time to arrange and edit proper ones. Oh well, it's good practice for us and the mixes have that live (radio?) feel to them.

This week is a selection of some of my favorite bassline, fidget and electro house. Some of it is old, some is quite new....but it's all good and bassy. And if you don't like heavy metal, don't worry...just let the first track build. The mix was made using a pair of Technics SL-1200 MKII turntables, a Korg KM-402 mixer and M-Audio Torq. I tried using some of Torq's built-in effects and the Kaoss Pad on my mixer. I hope it sounds decent.

My next mix is gonna be something really special......
(hint: Brazil vs. Jamaica)

And this mix is dedicated to Francois cause I know he's been waiting for it, haha!

It has been quite the week (or 2).

My first turntables were a pair of Geminis which served me well but I needed to upgrade to the 'standard', so to speak. So, I bought a pair of second hand Technics sl-1200 MKIIs. I got a really good deal on them but they had a few problems. So me, being new to these turntables, had no idea what to look for when buying second hand 1200s. When I brought them home I found out that the height adjustment ring on one of them was totally stuck and looked to have been turned past its limit. One of the pitch faders was really dirty and didn't slide well, while both were exhibiting the dreaded 'double zero' and uncalibrated pitches (according to the strobe). Also, one of the start/stop buttons felt like someone had spilt their lunch in and around the area so it was extremely sticky.

After days of research I finally had to bite the bullet and take each turntable apart and do a full cleaning and inspection. I desoldered and took apart each pitch fader, cleaning and lubing each thoroughly. I Took apart the button and tone arm assemblies and cleaned each out. Finally, reassembled everything and found that the height adjustment ring became functional again and all of the buttons/pitch faders were nice and snappy.

I am currently in the midst of calibrating the pitch faders which seems to be a very tedious job but it all seems worth it.

Oh, I'm also in the process of looking for a place downtown. The store is getting busier now that it's warming up outside.

While riding the subway in Manhattan a couple days ago I noticed someone reading an article about Don Rimini in a magazine. I was about to strike up a conversation about him, but the train stopped and the girl left. Great news though, the reigning king of heavy electro-house has released a new single!

This new track is part of Scion's latest sampler CD that's been complied by the folks over at Discobelle. Chyeah, the Swedish blog got a record deal. Grab the rest of the CD over there as it's periodically released. Make sure to find Top Billin's contribution.

What to say about Karaté? You get the Don's trademark blend of heavy-synths, thumping bass drums, snappy snares and as always, it doesn't follow the typical house structure (i.e. progressively building for 60-90 seconds before dropping the beat).

Just wanted to get your attention, I'm not implying Daft Punk has stolen anything. However, the influence of Space on Daft Punk and other electro/house artists in the last while is unquestionable.

I've been into Space for a while now, ever since I discovered them at The Red Room (one of the best blogs around). Enjoy the ambient, but danceable electronic/synth/pop/disco/spacey goodness.

This week's music video playback is probably the most influential song in DJ history. It is the first song featuring turntables and scratching. Grandmaster DST (DXT??) on the wheels gave many future DJ heroes like Qbert, Mixmaster Mike, Roc Raida and others their first taste of that ffff ffff fresh, fff fffrr fffrrr ffr fressssssssssh!

This week's Monday Mixdown features some of the best Baltimore and Philly Club tracks out there. It's a short mix - only 13 and a half minutes - but consists of 12 songs. That's some fast-paced mixing! Anyways, hope everyone enjoys it - don't ask me for the unreleased tracks in the mix though. I bought them legitimately of course...from where? I'll never tell. Haha! It's not that hard to figure out if you really want them.

Whether it's shakin' off or the Wu-Tang that you prefer, this mix will get you moving.

FYI: this mix was made using production software. I think from now on I'm gonna mix and record these live cause it takes a lot less time.

Another new feature here at The Boombox Incident. One of my favorite ways of procrastinating is searching for relatively unknown styles of dance on Youtube. Now I get to put this wasting of time to use.

Instead of pretending like I know the history of these dances, I'll just post the video and let you do the research. Take that!

Just kidding, I'll post whatever I can.

This first post is a style from New Orleans called Bounce. The dance shares its name with a style of hip hop that's been around for years now. Bounce has influenced tons of people from Master P to Lil Jon. There's a definite trend amongst the dancers in the video - those quick-shaking shoulders and hop/kicking combinations.

Abe Vigoda is definitely my favorite tropical punk band and in pure blogger fashion, I'll pretend that I know what the f' tropical punk is. Actually, their myspace has them listed as 'alternative', but to be honest, I'm not sure what that is either. Whatever. Point is, they're my new this-is-the-best.

Interestingly, Abe Vigoda was on that Mad Decent tour last fall, so if you checked that out, you're already in the know; that, or you may have read about them on the bloggernet. Me, I've had my head in the sand the past year, so I was a little slow joining the 'alternative' bandwagon. They finally got my attention when they put out their fantastic Reviver EP with a cover of Wild Heart. A Stevie Nicks revisioning hasn't sounded this good since Bootylicious (that was a cover too, right?).

It's been a while since Tittsworth released the first single off his 12 Steps LP. What I find amusing is that his new single, Drunk as F**K feat. The Federation, is really similar to WTF. What do I mean? The original version of the song is pretty weak, but the remixes are the mofuggin' shizzle. Nadastrom's remix of WTF is probably my favorite track to come out in the last year.

I've been anticipating this release since I heard Titts' The John McCain Experience mixtape back in early August. The mix doesn't feature the original, but the slammin' remix by Top Billin'. Just like Nadastrom's take on WTF, I think I'll be able to listen to this track over and over and it'll never get played out. The original Drunk as F**K is okay, but is totally outshined by the remixes. Meterhead delivers a disco remix with some of the funkiest bass I've heard in a while. Baltimore's Say Wut comes with his usual Bmore goodness, highlighted by those cheesy-ass horns. DMC World Champion DJ Craze's remix is a definite banger. It's a little darker than the other versions, but the clubby synth stabs and cheesy snares keep the fire hot.

Unfortunately, I've got nothin' for you to listen to.

Weekly MVP: Shaggy - Oh Carolina

Whether you're a big follower of dancehall or not, I'm sure everyone knows Shaggy when they hear him. Oh Carolina was his first hit single, and was released in 1993. It's actually a remake of this song. Although I prefer Mr. Boombastic as a song, this video is my favorite. I couldn't find much information about the video itself, but it does seem similar to many other dancehall videos from the early 90s. It reminds me of early 90s rap videos as well - lots of people bouncin'/dancin'/hangin' out it different coloured rooms and very little production value, but no need for it.

The look on Shaggy's face around 20 seconds in is priceless.

Radicool! here, born in the early 80s but I think I'm technically a child of the 90s. Whatevs.

All That and a Bag of Chips is a new feature here at The Boombox Incident. Whenever I feel like it (instead of giving myself more deadlines), I'm gonna post some biographical info, tracks and videos by an artist from the early-mid 90s that rocked the YMCA all-ages night dancefloor I used to get down on. In other words, they were all that and a bag of chips. A lot of the songs you'll hear have been ressurected through hype remixes by DJs like Dave Nada and Top Billin'. Show those DJs some love, and show these artists some love too....cause this 80s thing is gonna die out eventually and the 90s will be the new oldskool.

This inagaural post is all about Reel 2 Real - my favorite dance music of the 90s and tracks that still kill it today. Reel 2 Real's sound comes from DJ/Producer Erick Morillo who has produced a variety of styles of house music. His most famous work was for the ever-popular Strictly Rhythm label in the early-mid 90s. But who could forget the hype ragga vocals that, when combined with heavy bass and funky synths, gives the music its energy and originality. Mark Quashie a.k.a. The Mad Stuntman (this dude has a myspace?) is the man behind the mic. This guy wasn't necessarily part of Reel 2 Real (he was only on 4 singles), but I think he is a huge contributor in terms of their image and what most people remember as their sound.

Werner Herzog, Jonathan Demme... Dan Deacon?

On the special features of Herzog's latest documentary release, Encounters at the End of the World, there's an awesome interview with him and Jonathan Demme. At one point Demme gets to talking about self-made videos that are now popping up on the interweb (you know, a la youtube and whatnot), mentioning Dan Deacon's vids in particular, and that Herzog should check it out. Nice. The connection there must be Jimmy Joe Roche, an amazing Baltimore artist who's worked with both Dan Deacon and Demme. Maybe if Herzog likes it, well who knows. Fingers crossed we'll be hearing Dan Deacon score some good throat music for Herzog's next film.

Anyways... Werner Herzog, Jonathan Demme, Dan Deacon. Nice.

If you haven't previewed Dan Deacon's new album yet, Bromst, it's a must. Be sure to buy it when it comes out next week, March 24th. And if you don't even know who he is, well you're missing out on the best thing to come out of Baltimore since the world found out about Bmore club and the David Simons/Ed Burns collab. So get on it!

*Note: I haven't actually watched the interview; I found out about it through our good friend Jay Cheel over at the Documentary Blog. That said, I have seen the movie; it rules.

Weekly MVP: Big Joe Krash - Break the Chain

This week's Music Video Playback is one I saw on Rap City back in the mid 90s. At the time I didn't know that Big Joe Krash was actually KRS-One. However, I learned the whole story a few years later while searching for the track on vinyl - sidenote, I eventually copped the vinyl on eBay, and it's the rarest piece of music in my collection.

This video came out in 1994 and is connected to a comic book by Kyle Baker. The comic is about a character named Big Joe Krash, and came with a cassette tape with two songs by the character (performed by KRS-One). A small number of vinyl copies of the songs were also released. They've become a real hot collector's item (mine cost $100!!). Along with the comic and the vinyl was this music video. The artwork was done by Baker as well, and reflects what you'll find in the comic.

Not only is the video dope, but the song is a real banger as well. It has the loud, bassy boom-bap sound that embodies KRS-One's best work.

Don't hurt your neck bobbin' to this one.

Monday Mixdown #1 - The Boombox Incident Podcast

MMMMMMmmmmmmmmonday Mixdown y'all!

Here at The Boombox Incident, we love alliteration and we love original content. Today is the first of what will be a (hopefully) weekly feature. Myself and the other writers are going to rotate each week, putting together a short mixtape for your pleasure.
In order to make things interesting, each podcast is going to have a common theme. It may be a specific genre or a particular sound - who knows!

I'm stepping up to the plate(s) first and couldn't be more excited. This first installment consists of not only some of my favorite New Wave and Italo tracks, but the Freddie Mercury and Real Life ones are probably my two favorite songs of all time.
I'd also like to dedicate this mix to The Red Room. Roman introduced me to this site almost 3 years ago, and I think it changed my life. This blog finds the rarest and funkiest italo/electro/new wave out there. All of the tracks posted are high-quality rips from vinyl that most people never knew existed. I discovered 3 of the songs in this mix from The Red Room, but I recommend you head over there and explore the countless others.

In the near future we'll have some more options regarding this podcast.....so stay tuned!

I've been a DJ for almost 11 years now, and I've been through a number of mixers and turntables. For a long time I used the classic Vestax PMC-05 Pro mixer. This 2-channel bad boy is probably the best turntablist mixer money can buy. However, about 3 years ago I decided to focus solely on mixing dance/club music (I still use my turntablist skills during live sets though). For this reason I purchased a more suitable mixer. After careful research, I decided upon the Korg KM-402.

Financially, this was the best mixer 'for the price'. After all was said-and-done I paid about $650 Canadian. At the time I couldn't afford a Pioneer DJM-700 or 800, or a Mackie D4 Pro (both of which I have used and loved). With 4 Channels and built-in digital effects, the KM-402 had all the features I wanted for a good price. It has all the basic controls: crossfader curve control, crossfader, cue and effects channel assignment, and 3-channel equalization. The crossfader is quite sturdy (hasn't shown any sign of wearing yet), and smooth as well. Although I wouldn't recommend heavy scratch sessions with this mixer, it feels and sounds very nice when cutting.

The best feature, and my reason for recommending this mixer, is the built-in Kaoss Pad. Despite lacking the same features as the original Kaoss Pad, this thing is equipped with 89 different digital effects, 10 synths and three memory banks for saving your favorite sounds. The intensity of each effect is controlled with a dry/wet dial. The parameters of each effect is controlled by touching the pad itself, which utilizes an X/Y grid. The Kaoss Pad can applied to each, and any of the 4 channels in the same way the crossfader and cue assignments work. The 'Hold' button toggles the pad's activation; you can either touch the pad once and lock the effects on, or hold your finger down to keep the sounds going.

I'll reveal a small technique of mine and say that these effects are a lot more useful than making cool sounds during live performances. Instead of using the volume sliders to mix tracks, sometimes I'll use a flanger setting and move my finger from the top left to the bottom right of the pad in order to fade out. The top left removes all the bass from the track (which I often do anyways with the EQ knob), and the sound then flanges as I move to the bottom right where the channel is silenced. The Kaoss Pad's intuitive design allows for a lot of nice mixing tricks such as this. Furthermore, the pad has a tap-BPM button allowing you to keep the effects on beat.
