Not since Bootylicious

Abe Vigoda is definitely my favorite tropical punk band and in pure blogger fashion, I'll pretend that I know what the f' tropical punk is. Actually, their myspace has them listed as 'alternative', but to be honest, I'm not sure what that is either. Whatever. Point is, they're my new this-is-the-best.

Interestingly, Abe Vigoda was on that Mad Decent tour last fall, so if you checked that out, you're already in the know; that, or you may have read about them on the bloggernet. Me, I've had my head in the sand the past year, so I was a little slow joining the 'alternative' bandwagon. They finally got my attention when they put out their fantastic Reviver EP with a cover of Wild Heart. A Stevie Nicks revisioning hasn't sounded this good since Bootylicious (that was a cover too, right?).

Abe Vigoda - Wild Heart

And for a little context and some extra awesomeness:

Weekly MVP: Toddla T & Herve feat. Serocee - Shake It

Sheffield's king of bashment teams up Herve for this week's music video playback.

There's not much to say about this, other than the boombox heads remind me of Daft Punk videos. Still, I don't think they're stealing any ideas. The track is relatively new, so there's not much info about the video. However, you can hit up Toddla T's website for some behind the scenes footage.

I've never seen this many white girls in a dancehall video.

Big Up to Beat Drops

I love it when the bass comes in!
These tracks are my favorite in terms of their build-up to beat drop. Some shift from really mellow to crazy drums, bass and synths while others are pretty full with a minimal, but slammin' beat. Basically, all of these tracks make me crash my car cause I was headbangin' too much. I guess you could say these are my top 10 beat drops, although there's a couple I can't post but you can purchase at any fine MP3 retailer.

In no particular order:

Tittsworth feat. Kid Sister and Pase Rock - WTF (Nadastrom Remix - Stretch Armtstrong Edit)
Beat drop - 0:45

Shinichi Osawa - Star Guitar (Armand Van Helden Remix)

Beat drop - 1:55

Mikix the Cat - Freeze
Beat drop - 1:14

Herve - Let's Get Dirty
Beat drop - 0:45

The Count and Sinden feat. Rye Rye - Hardcore Girls (Don Rimini Remix)
Beat drop - 2:44

Hot Pink Delorean feat. Knowlton Walsh - Freak Night (Fantasadon remix)
Beat drop - 0:59

The Yank - We Can't Be Stopped
Beat drop - 1:27

Mark Ronson feat. Amy Winehouse - Valerie (The Count and Sinden Remix)
Beat drop - 0:44

GRUM - Go Back (Le Castle Vania Remix)
Beat drop - 1:19

Jokers of the Scene - Baggy Bottom Boys

Beat drop - 1:31

These are on the list too, but you need to go pick them up elsewhere.

Rico Tubbs - Hip Rave Anthem
Beat drop - 0:59

Stuffa feat. MaPei - Pretty Girls (Sinden Remix)

Nadastrom - Pussy

Major Lazer @ SXSW = Some Weird Shizz

I saw this vid posted over at Discobelle, who grabbed it from FADER TV. Switch and Diplo started Major Lazer recently, but this post isn't about that. Although, I'll mention that I'm pissed I didn't win a Major Lazer shirt from Mad Decent's 'peace outtie' photo competition. Hopefully they'll be selling them soon.

This video could be some weird surrealist film project if taken out of context. I wish I was there. That's all I'll say....you just need to watch.

New Top Billin' Tittsworth single!!!

It's been a while since Tittsworth released the first single off his 12 Steps LP. What I find amusing is that his new single, Drunk as F**K feat. The Federation, is really similar to WTF. What do I mean? The original version of the song is pretty weak, but the remixes are the mofuggin' shizzle. Nadastrom's remix of WTF is probably my favorite track to come out in the last year.

I've been anticipating this release since I heard Titts' The John McCain Experience mixtape back in early August. The mix doesn't feature the original, but the slammin' remix by Top Billin'. Just like Nadastrom's take on WTF, I think I'll be able to listen to this track over and over and it'll never get played out. The original Drunk as F**K is okay, but is totally outshined by the remixes. Meterhead delivers a disco remix with some of the funkiest bass I've heard in a while. Baltimore's Say Wut comes with his usual Bmore goodness, highlighted by those cheesy-ass horns. DMC World Champion DJ Craze's remix is a definite banger. It's a little darker than the other versions, but the clubby synth stabs and cheesy snares keep the fire hot.

Unfortunately, I've got nothin' for you to listen to.
So head on over to Juno and sample the goods.
Then buy it!

I see a trend heating up...

Get Mad - Legend of Zelda edit from tha 1 who Trevs on Vimeo.

I see more and more of these 'video remixes' every day. LOVE IT.

Song: South Rakkas Crew - Get Mad (Boy 8-bit remix)

New Mikix the Cat EP

Mikix the Cat is from France and knows what time it is. His music features heavy bass, heavy drums and heavy synths. But he retains a hip hop sensibility (often through samples), making the music dancefloor-friendly over here in North America. He's just released the 'Freeze EP' through Trouble & Bass Records. You can snag the single 'Movin' Around' below. Definitely buy the rest of the record over @ TTLab or any other fine digi-dealer.

Mikix the Cat - Movin' Around (alt)

Bonus!

Mikix the Cat - Wuz (alt) - "that Wu-Tang slang is mad f*ckin' dangerous!"
Mikix the Cat - Freeze (alt) - my personal favorite

Glass Candy: Geto Boys

I know I just posted a Glass Candy song the other day, but I finally sat down and listened to the whole of Deep Gems this past weekend and I can't resist throwing up some more. They get notice. It just ain't enough. I'm guessing you've heard Leif's remix of Geto Boys that's been getting some play on the blogadio lately, but you might be missing out on is how ridiculously good the original is. Ish is funky as frak.

Weekly MVP: Shaggy - Oh Carolina

Whether you're a big follower of dancehall or not, I'm sure everyone knows Shaggy when they hear him. Oh Carolina was his first hit single, and was released in 1993. It's actually a remake of this song. Although I prefer Mr. Boombastic as a song, this video is my favorite. I couldn't find much information about the video itself, but it does seem similar to many other dancehall videos from the early 90s. It reminds me of early 90s rap videos as well - lots of people bouncin'/dancin'/hangin' out it different coloured rooms and very little production value, but no need for it.

The look on Shaggy's face around 20 seconds in is priceless.

DOOMface "Chinatown"

Rlygood.

DOOM & Ghostface - Chinatown

DOOM & Ghostface - Chinatown (remix)

Izza Kizza "Bump!"

Funkiest beat I've heard in a minute. One of the few hip hop songs I've liked in a minute.

Izza has got one of the best MySpace pages I have ever seen. That's some good ass marketing.

Izza Kizza - Bump!

K**O: Bad name, worse myspace pic, tight ish

This guy's got the worst name and a pitiful myspace pic; but he makes up for it (and very much so) in other departments.

Can't wait for some PBJ remixes

Lots of potential on this track (alt).

Snoop vs Glass Candy: Major Win

A mash-must. This is one perfect coupling.

All That and a Bag of Chips - Reel 2 Real

Radicool! here, born in the early 80s but I think I'm technically a child of the 90s. Whatevs.

All That and a Bag of Chips is a new feature here at The Boombox Incident. Whenever I feel like it (instead of giving myself more deadlines), I'm gonna post some biographical info, tracks and videos by an artist from the early-mid 90s that rocked the YMCA all-ages night dancefloor I used to get down on. In other words, they were all that and a bag of chips. A lot of the songs you'll hear have been ressurected through hype remixes by DJs like Dave Nada and Top Billin'. Show those DJs some love, and show these artists some love too....cause this 80s thing is gonna die out eventually and the 90s will be the new oldskool.

This inagaural post is all about Reel 2 Real - my favorite dance music of the 90s and tracks that still kill it today. Reel 2 Real's sound comes from DJ/Producer Erick Morillo who has produced a variety of styles of house music. His most famous work was for the ever-popular Strictly Rhythm label in the early-mid 90s. But who could forget the hype ragga vocals that, when combined with heavy bass and funky synths, gives the music its energy and originality. Mark Quashie a.k.a. The Mad Stuntman (this dude has a myspace?) is the man behind the mic. This guy wasn't necessarily part of Reel 2 Real (he was only on 4 singles), but I think he is a huge contributor in terms of their image and what most people remember as their sound.

Below I've posted my 3 favorite tracks and some moving images. Play these loud!

Reel 2 Real - I Like to Move It
(alt link)
Reel 2 Real - Can U Feel It (alt link)
Reel 2 Real - Go On Move (alt link)

Get over that hump day, the Sam Cassell way.

Here are 11 songs that I highly recommend, new and old, that will remove the taste of that disturbing picture. Sam, wtf dawg?

Designer Drugs - Back Up In This (Le Castle Vania, Computer Club And Rrrump Remix)

Lazy Jay - Float My Boat (Original Mix)

Gorilla Marketing - Housemeister

Heads Up (Mightyfools Remix) - Sound Of Stereo

Izza Kizza - Hello (DJ Wool Remix) Euro edit

Little boots - Meddle (AC Slater and DJ Skeet Skeet remix featuring GoldieLocks)

Ludacris - One More Drink (Loud Party Remix)

Das Racist - Pizza Hut Taco Bell (Guy Michael-Barletta Remix)

Thunderheist - Sweet 16 (MANSION Remix)

Jesse Rose - Touch My Horn (Mad Kids Remix)

N.A.S.A. Featuring M.I.A., Santogold and Spankrock - Whatchadoin' (Villains Remix)

Oh Andy...

Shit kinda bangs... amirite? (via Mad Decent blog)

Jimmy Fallon and Lil' Jon collab?

I can't be the first to mistake these two. And I know I'm not the first to be all 'scited about this.

Werner Herzog, Jonathan Demme... Dan Deacon?

On the special features of Herzog's latest documentary release, Encounters at the End of the World, there's an awesome interview with him and Jonathan Demme. At one point Demme gets to talking about self-made videos that are now popping up on the interweb (you know, a la youtube and whatnot), mentioning Dan Deacon's vids in particular, and that Herzog should check it out. Nice. The connection there must be Jimmy Joe Roche, an amazing Baltimore artist who's worked with both Dan Deacon and Demme. Maybe if Herzog likes it, well who knows. Fingers crossed we'll be hearing Dan Deacon score some good throat music for Herzog's next film.

Anyways... Werner Herzog, Jonathan Demme, Dan Deacon. Nice.

If you haven't previewed Dan Deacon's new album yet, Bromst, it's a must. Be sure to buy it when it comes out next week, March 24th. And if you don't even know who he is, well you're missing out on the best thing to come out of Baltimore since the world found out about Bmore club and the David Simons/Ed Burns collab. So get on it!

*Note: I haven't actually watched the interview; I found out about it through our good friend Jay Cheel over at the Documentary Blog. That said, I have seen the movie; it rules.

Weekly MVP: Big Joe Krash - Break the Chain

This week's Music Video Playback is one I saw on Rap City back in the mid 90s. At the time I didn't know that Big Joe Krash was actually KRS-One. However, I learned the whole story a few years later while searching for the track on vinyl - sidenote, I eventually copped the vinyl on eBay, and it's the rarest piece of music in my collection.

This video came out in 1994 and is connected to a comic book by Kyle Baker. The comic is about a character named Big Joe Krash, and came with a cassette tape with two songs by the character (performed by KRS-One). A small number of vinyl copies of the songs were also released. They've become a real hot collector's item (mine cost $100!!). Along with the comic and the vinyl was this music video. The artwork was done by Baker as well, and reflects what you'll find in the comic.

Not only is the video dope, but the song is a real banger as well. It has the loud, bassy boom-bap sound that embodies KRS-One's best work.

Don't hurt your neck bobbin' to this one.

Sorry about the ads before the video, the Youtube posting has embedding disabled.

Monday Mixdown #1 - The Boombox Incident Podcast

MMMMMMmmmmmmmmonday Mixdown y'all!

Here at The Boombox Incident, we love alliteration and we love original content. Today is the first of what will be a (hopefully) weekly feature. Myself and the other writers are going to rotate each week, putting together a short mixtape for your pleasure.
In order to make things interesting, each podcast is going to have a common theme. It may be a specific genre or a particular sound - who knows!

I'm stepping up to the plate(s) first and couldn't be more excited. This first installment consists of not only some of my favorite New Wave and Italo tracks, but the Freddie Mercury and Real Life ones are probably my two favorite songs of all time.
I'd also like to dedicate this mix to The Red Room. Roman introduced me to this site almost 3 years ago, and I think it changed my life. This blog finds the rarest and funkiest italo/electro/new wave out there. All of the tracks posted are high-quality rips from vinyl that most people never knew existed. I discovered 3 of the songs in this mix from The Red Room, but I recommend you head over there and explore the countless others.

In the near future we'll have some more options regarding this podcast.....so stay tuned!

Tracklist:
Freddie Mercury - Love Kills (Radio Edit)
Fantastique - Mama Told Me
Pineapples - Come On Closer (Dub)
Real Life - Send Me An Angel '89
Chrome - Caribbean Air Control

Big Bills Remixes

When I first saw the video for Big Bills I was in love. In love with Caroline Polachek, of Chairlift, of course. Oh, the song is pretty good too.

Green Label Sound has released a bunch of remixes for you to download here. All these goodies produced by Blaqstarr, Jokers of the Scene, Justus Koehncke, El Guincho, Francis and the Lights and, remixing their own song, Flosstradamus.

Green Label Sound really knows what they are doing.

Here's the original video:

Do It To It Volume 2

Hot damn hoe here we go again.

It's getting really serious over at BRLSQOTHEQUE. The first Do It To It released had a bunch of turf shakers produced by the likes of Bird Peterson, Dave Nada and Cosmo Baker to name a few. If you haven't already, get it at the Burlesque store.

The second volume, judging by the promo video, looks to be off the Richter. This should be an insta-cop.

Tracklist:

Bird Peterson "Torture Motherf*cker"
Dave Nada "JB Baby"
Emynd "Hold it Down 2009"
Wizard of Gaz "Preacher Man"
Tittsworth "I'm Rich"
Mike the 2600 King "Hold Up I'm Comin'"

Korg KM-402

I've been a DJ for almost 11 years now, and I've been through a number of mixers and turntables. For a long time I used the classic Vestax PMC-05 Pro mixer. This 2-channel bad boy is probably the best turntablist mixer money can buy. However, about 3 years ago I decided to focus solely on mixing dance/club music (I still use my turntablist skills during live sets though). For this reason I purchased a more suitable mixer. After careful research, I decided upon the Korg KM-402.

Financially, this was the best mixer 'for the price'. After all was said-and-done I paid about $650 Canadian. At the time I couldn't afford a Pioneer DJM-700 or 800, or a Mackie D4 Pro (both of which I have used and loved). With 4 Channels and built-in digital effects, the KM-402 had all the features I wanted for a good price. It has all the basic controls: crossfader curve control, crossfader, cue and effects channel assignment, and 3-channel equalization. The crossfader is quite sturdy (hasn't shown any sign of wearing yet), and smooth as well. Although I wouldn't recommend heavy scratch sessions with this mixer, it feels and sounds very nice when cutting.

The best feature, and my reason for recommending this mixer, is the built-in Kaoss Pad. Despite lacking the same features as the original Kaoss Pad, this thing is equipped with 89 different digital effects, 10 synths and three memory banks for saving your favorite sounds. The intensity of each effect is controlled with a dry/wet dial. The parameters of each effect is controlled by touching the pad itself, which utilizes an X/Y grid. The Kaoss Pad can applied to each, and any of the 4 channels in the same way the crossfader and cue assignments work. The 'Hold' button toggles the pad's activation; you can either touch the pad once and lock the effects on, or hold your finger down to keep the sounds going.

I'll reveal a small technique of mine and say that these effects are a lot more useful than making cool sounds during live performances. Instead of using the volume sliders to mix tracks, sometimes I'll use a flanger setting and move my finger from the top left to the bottom right of the pad in order to fade out. The top left removes all the bass from the track (which I often do anyways with the EQ knob), and the sound then flanges as I move to the bottom right where the channel is silenced. The Kaoss Pad's intuitive design allows for a lot of nice mixing tricks such as this. Furthermore, the pad has a tap-BPM button allowing you to keep the effects on beat.

If you have the chance to try this mixer (or its 2-channel sister), don't miss out!

Idol Inspired MJ: Allison Iraheta

Last night I actually sat through a little bit of American Idol (it was Michael Jackson night, OK?). I was lucky enough to see Allison Iraheta perform Michael Jackson's Give Into Me. Allison nailed it, I applauded, then quickly changed the channel before Randy Jackson could barrage her with his terrible slang. Looks like he lost weight though, YGB! She really reminds me of Pink with talent, or, a modern Melissa Etheridge gone slightly punk and very unpolished.

Side note, Michael Jackson's Give Into Me was really the only shining light on the Dangerous album.

Damn that Dirty Disco Youth

This this kid is on fire right now. After releasing his first EP, Bleep on Etage Noir Special, this 18 year old has earned the respect of Boys Noize and The Bloody Beetroots. Dirty Disco Youth already has a shit-ton of remixes out, more on the way, and there is no doubt he will be a force in the electro scene. Be sure you check out the spring 2009 mix which previews some new material from this beast from Hamburg.

His recent remix of Super Chichi by French producer Night Drugs is just superb. This hard hitting remix beats you up and leaves you begging for more. An infusion of that popular breakbeat and electro combination but doesn't feel worn out like the others.

Night Drugs - Super Chichi (Dirty Disco Youth Remix) - (alt)

Some other goodies:

The Bloody Beetroots - Rombo (Dirty Disco Youth Remix) - (alt) (fukinuts)
Dirty Disco Youth - Get The Fuck Out - (alt)
Dirty Disco Youth 2009 Spring Mix

Dirty Disco Youth's 2nd EP is on the way but be sure to grab Bleep from your regular distributor.

Drunkin' Bitches!

True Pseudo, once a Drum and Bass group, are a welcome addition to the electro/dance punk genre. Think The Rapture but grittier. The band out of Orange County, California, recently released a new EP on Chicago based Calamity Jane Recordings. This 3 track EP features their single 'Freaking Me Out' and remixes by Nadastrom and ULTRNX.

The remix by Nadastrom is full of fidgety glitch house, smooth synth and a great vocal sample snippet. This will be a dance floor destroyer.

True Pseudo - Freaking Me Out (sample)
True Pseudo - Freaking Me Out (Nadastrom DRNKN BTCHS Remix) (sample)
True Pseudo - Freaking Me Out (ULTRNX Remix) (sample)

Buy 'Freaking Me Out' (CJR4002) on Beatport or wherever you get good stuff.

Thunder In My Heart

Epic.

There's a Sidechains bandwagon, and you should be on it!

Barcelona's Sidechains is getting featured on more and more music blogs....and rightfully so. He's effectively captured the musical sensibility of the 80s New Wave, updated the sounds and blended it with French House. The music straddles the line between cheesy and epic, without ever going too far in either direction.

Below are my three favorite tracks, but anything by Sidechains is damn good. These three jams are bound to be summer classics, and I think this Spanish producer is gonna blow the !@#$ up pretty soon.

Sidechains has recently released a free EP of remix work.
Get the full thing at his Myspace.

Madonna - Into the Groove (Sidechains Remix)
Farley Jackmaster Funk - Love Can't Turn Around (Sidechains Remix)

Brick Bandits on FADER TV

I can comfortably say that Philly/Brick City Club music is my favorite style right now. And no one does it better than the Brick Bandits. This crew is pretty big, but most of the well-known work comes from DJ Sega, DJ Tameil, Tim Dolla, DJ Tiga (not the one you're thinking of) and Dirty South Joe. Not only are they responible for some bangin' ish, but their music has fostered a lot of the new dances the Myspace/Youtube kids are doing. Future posts are gonna give you a taste of these moves, like the Wu-Tang, Swing Dat Shyt, D-Mack and Spongebob.

The Brick Bandits were recently featured on FADER TV. I recently got to know DJ Tameil and hopefully can get an interview sometime soon.

As for now, check them out on FADER TV here.
Then go buy their EP.

The BBI Weekly MVP: Wu-Tang Clan - Da Mystery of Chessboxin'

I'm a huge fan of music videos, especially late 80s and early 90s rap videos. Every week The Boombox Incident is gonna post a favorite. They're not always gonna be rap videos, but they will usually be older. Music videos get pulled from Youtube often, so we'll try to find reliable links and fix broken ones as often as possible.

This first post features Wu-Tang Clan's Da Mystery of Chessboxin'. I love the old Wu-Tang videos. Not only is it a bunch of dudes just chillin' while someone rhymes, they tend to spend a lot of time in sewer (or sewery) areas. This really reflects the grimey, wet sound of the 36 Chambers album. Although I love Method Man's choice to wear a balaclava, Ghostface's pantyhose gives the video the mysterious feeling I think it's looking for.

Enjoy The BBI's first weekly Music Video Playback.
I gotta get one of those Wu-Tang hoodies.

Radicool & Outty: The Upright Citizens Mixtape

Blogland,

Let me take a moment to introduce myself. Remember when Big Tigger still hosted Rap City untill R-Kelly had a hare-brain idea having him featured on a track? He would always bring in the wackiest guest DJ's and they would have a 2-3 minute long introduction with about 10 different aka's and most of the time they were just phrases and not actual names? Well; "It's yo boi 'Kyle' aka 'Outty' aka '1/2 of iFamous' aka 'Watchout for your girl' aka 'Your DJ's favorite blogger' aka 'roll up the rim and win' aka 'She seen them 22's, we in room two-22' aka 'Are you Mexican cuz I'm in the mood for tacos'.

Sorry about that.

Radicool! and I recently put together a mixtape featuring some choice cuts in the philly/bmore club and fidget/electro/blog house scenes. Here's a taste of what you might be expecting here at The Boombox Incident. Enjoy!

First Post

Hey everyone, this is my first post.
It's more of a test really. There's gonna be a lot more to come.
The blog is still a work in progress, but I'm gonna launch anyways.

There's two other people involved with this blog, and you'll hear from
them soon.

Chyeah.
